Labour faults Mimiko’s bid to host LP’s convention

The two Labour Centres in the country, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, have kicked against the reported plan by the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, to host the Labour Party’s convention in Akure on Saturday.
The leadership of the labour movement in the country is insisting that it is wrong for Mimiko, who defected from the party to the PDP last week, to preside over the party’s convention.
The President of the NLC, Mr. Abdulwaheed Omar, who urged members of the union to ignore the convention, said the organisers might have an ulterior motive.
Omar and his counterpart from the TUC, Mr. Bala Kaigama, said it was not right for somebody, who had left the party for another party, to host the party’s convention.
The duo also promised to reposition the LP to make it serve the interest of the Nigerian people.
They said, “Our major concern is that a governor who has already defected to another party is now the one who is sponsoring, who is hosting and supervising the convention of an independent party like Labour Party.
“It is that concern that made us to call this meeting of major stakeholders of Labour Party with a view to making sure that we call for the immediate postponement of the Akure convention with a view to fixing a new date and fixing a new venue that will be more independent to allow for the party to run its convention very independent of any other external forces.”
Omar said the leadership of the organised union would not allow the move to undermine the independence of the Labour Party.
